It’s the official start of summer—which means sunshine, long weekends, and… a quieter caseload?
If things feel a little slow right now, take a deep breath—you’re not alone. Many therapists notice a dip in sessions this time of year. Clients are traveling, kids are out of school, and routines shift. The good news? It’s seasonal—not personal.
Before you go into panic mode, here are 6 things to check (and a few ways to turn this time into an opportunity):

1. Check the Calendar
Summer travel and school breaks often lead to more cancellations, reschedules, and “we’ll circle back in September” messages. This is a common pattern for therapists—especially those who work with families, students, or teachers. It’s temporary.
2. Is Your Referral Network Still Active?
If your referrals have dipped, consider sending a quick check-in to colleagues, doctors, or past clients who often refer to you. Let them know you’re currently accepting new clients, and invite them to share your updated info if appropriate.
3. Review Your Website and SEO
When was the last time you checked your contact form? Is your scheduler linking properly? Are you still showing up in local searches? Sometimes, a hidden tech issue can quietly bottleneck your referrals. A quick audit can make a big difference.
4. Reconnect With Your Audience
Summer is a great time to pop in with a short newsletter, a helpful seasonal tip, or a quick social media post. Staying visible reminds current and potential clients that you’re still here—and can help boost bookings as people return to their routines.
5. Take a Look at Availability
Is your scheduler showing anything open? If your calendar appears fully booked (even if it’s not), new clients may assume you’re unavailable. Try opening a few flexible or one-time consultation spots to invite new inquiries.
6. Use the Time Intentionally
Slower seasons are perfect for all the things that get pushed aside during busy months. Consider:
Updating your paperwork or intake process
Creating a resource for clients
Revisiting your marketing plan
Resting, reflecting, and recharging
You might even come out of this season stronger and more organized than before.
Remember: Slow Doesn’t Mean Stagnant
A quiet month doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. More often than not, it means your clients are simply in vacation mode—and you deserve that spaciousness, too.
